Thomas Paul “Tom”  Ewig, Sr., 85, of Houtzdale, died Monday, February 8, 2010 at ARHS Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born September 17, 1924 in Queen, PA, the son of the late John F. and Olive Franklin (Imes) Ewig.  Thomas married Alice Ruth Johnson on December 9, 1964 in Altoona.  She preceded him in death on June 1, 2008.  Thomas retired in 1987 as a groundskeeper at Mansion Park for the Altoona Area School District after 33 years of services.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.  Thomas enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping and boating.  He is survived by his daughters, Alice “Mandie” Epps of Altoona, Beth Ann Ewig of Cumberland, MD, and Catherine “Kitty Lou” Sampson, of TN, his son Thomas P., Jr. of Altoona, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and sisters, Virginia Ruby and Susan Mirobelli.  Thomas was preceded in death by his sister Mary Trail, and brother John Ewig.   Friends will be received from 11:00am – Noon on Friday, February 12, 2010 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona.  A funeral service will be held at noon on Friday at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Tina Sell.  Interment will be held at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood.
